Creating a cosy guest bedroom with pattern, textures and a new upholstered bed
ad - this post is in collaboration with Button & Sprung but all thoughts are my own.
Our guest bedroom is small and north-facing, but there’s no reason why we couldn’t turn it into a comfortable cosy space for our guests to enjoy! The most important part is, of course, the bed, and so we opted for a king-size despite it having to go into the corner in order to do so.
The room is dark and cold so I went for a warm yellow on the ceiling and a dark floral wallpaper on the walls. Every time I experimented with lighter colours on the walls, they just looked murky and grey, so this gorgeous dark muted green worked perfectly.
With lots of wood and hard surfaces in the room, going for a beautiful soft velvet on the bed has really helped bring warmth and cosiness, as well as the addition of the small rug on the floor, adding more textures and interest to the space.

The Primrose king-sized bed in Lagoon Rich Velvet with turned legs in Walnut from Button & Sprung makes a striking statement without overpowering the small room. Button & Sprung have a fantastic selection of headboard options and I almost went for the Willow with it’s plush pillow feature, but the curves of the Primrose won me over.
As this is our guest bedroom (and we don’t have a utility,) it’s important for us to have space under the bed for storage so we went for a bed frame instead of a divan. This way we can slide awkward items like the ironing board and tool boxes under there out of sight.
Another feature of the Primrose bed that I love, are the traditional turned feet which I chose in a walnut stain to provide a little contrast with the solid oak floor beneath it. It was also put together quickly by two guys from Button & Sprung in the bedroom, so no heavy lifting or assembling for me for once! What a treat!
This room has a lot of wood with the exposed beams, reclaimed church windows and flooring, so the fabric bed, floral wallpaper and whimsical blinds provide a brilliant softness to the room which I love and make a huge difference from the cold space it was when we moved in. See below!
There are other important elements to consider when planning a guest bedroom space and I always advise it’s worth sleeping in there yourself for a few nights to really see what is required.
Are the blinds black-out enough? Is there a street lamp shining in you hadn’t considered? Are the electrical sockets really far from the bed?
10 Things you need to create a cosy guest bedroom
Comfortable bed with ample bedding, I always size up on the duvet!
Spare blanket and/or cushions so guests can adjust the warmth/head height depending on personal preference.
A mirror! Don’t make your guests have to rush their morning routine in the bathroom!
A bin - nobody wants to be tucking their rubbish into their suitcase, or having to walk through the house with it.
An empty cupboard for storage, but if not possible, a free surface to put items on.
A side-light for extra cosiness in the evenings.
Sockets next to the bed, or an extension lead if needed.
Pegs on the wall or hooks on the back of the door for an easy hanging or storage option.
Wifi Code in a noticeable place - maybe on a pretty piece of paper and stuck on the mirror?
A couple of magazines on the side or your latest must-read.
